Dimensioning of power components

The electrical size of the thyristors in the power section, switching current and blocking voltage, depends on the respective welding task and the mains or primary voltage of the system.

The thyristors are then rated according to the current to be switched and the duty cycle of the welding system. In the load diagrams of the power sections, the permissible currents are plotted as a function of the duty cycle.

For safe operation of the power units, the switching current of the thyristors is determined according to the short-circuit power of the welding equipment. This short-circuit power depends on the type of machine. Based on the experience gained, guideline values for dimensioning were determined. In projection welding, for example, the rated current must be multiplied by a factor of 4.5 to determine the switching current of the thyristor.
